Having been born in El Salvador, I’ve hated the idea of Captain America. I didn’t like any comic that had him in it and I didn’t like the character…until now. I’ve read a few Brian Micheal Bendis comics with Captain America in them that won me over. Why? Because Captain America is the Superman of Marvel comics. He’s the one superhero that actually lives out what we would call Catholic values. He lives them out and and argues down other superheroes that try to live out less virtuous lives. He earned my respect in spite of the his silly concept. He’s pretty cool just because of what he believes and the way he lives out virtue.
By the way, there is also a Captain Britain (http://www.comicvine.com/captain-britain/29-7477/)
…and the official Canadian Superteam is Alpha Flight (http://www.comicvine.com/alpha-flight/65-14616/)

Hi Father,
You can count me and my colleague George Martell from the New Media Office in the Archdiocese of Boston among those going to World Youth Day Madrid next summer. We’re going with our archdiocesan pilgrimage and will be providing live photoblogging, live video streaming, and traditional blogging and social media from the whole trip. It would be great to find time to get together with other SQPNers in Madrid.

Hi Father,
I get why as a European you don’t understand the reasoning behind Captain America, but I thought you went way overboard in your rant on the subject. So much so , that while we were listening in the car, someone said “Turn this idiot off and put something else on”. First time I could not defend you and we moved on to something else.

Dear Father, I was laughing out loud this morning while listening to you rant on and on about Captain America. Too funny! But you missed a key opportunity for “Captain The Netherlands”. That would not be his name at all. He would be……….THE FLYING DUTCHMAN!!!
Thank you so much for your dedication to developing excellent new media with a Catholic focus!

@Tim – Irony is clearly a form of humor not everyone appreciates. For my part, I don’t appreciate being called an idiot

Hi Father Roderick and listeners
I suppose Captain America must seem a strange character to people from outside the USA. I. Thought so too, until I read about the history of this super hero. He was created in the early 40s by Joe Simone and Jack Kirby as an expression of their patriotism and opposition to Nazism. They were both Jewish. Caps arcrth enemy was an evil Nazi called the Red Skull, a Hitler figure. After the war, Captain America took on various Communists and even the Red Skull went over to the Soviet side, justifying the Red in his name, I suppose! The good Captain has been one of the most influential and imitated of super heroes. Some of you out there might be interested to know that there is a film in the works about the Captain’s origins and yes, it also features the Red Skull!
My continued prayers for you and your listeners

So today as I was driving my 3 sons to Catholic school I played a podcast of “The Break” for the first time. I introduced you as a “really cool priest” who loves technology just like my 9 year old Jonah and Star Wars like my 6 year old Asher and 4 year old Dutch (yes that is his real name =). They thought your were awesome until the comments on Captain America. I am sorry to say that you may have lost them with the desparaging comments on an american boy’s comic hero. Let’s face it we don’t have many examples, real or fictitious, in American culture of a male hero to live up to. Of course there is Jesus but he’s not from the States. At any rate I will still listen and can not get enough of Heathy Catholic- or is it Health and Holiness? Keep up the GREAT work! Susan H. from Minnesota
